Precipitating Quasigeostrophic Equations and Potential Vorticity Inversion with Phase Changes
Precipitating versions of the quasigeostrophic (QG) equations are derived systematically, starting from the equations of a cloud-resolving model. The presence of phase changes of water from vapor to liquid and vice versa leads to important differences from the dry QG case. The precipitating QG (PQG) equations, in their simplest form, have two variables to describe the full system: a potential v...

In this paper we derive the quasigeostrophic potential vorticity equations, starting from primitive type equations, as the Rossby number goes to zero, and prove the convergence as long as the limit system has strong enough solutions. We in particular take account of the boundary layers and investigate the existence of global weak solutions of the limit system with physical boundary conditions.

متن کاملPotential Vorticity Inversion on a Hemisphere
Several different kinds of accurate potential vorticity (PV) inversion operators, and the associated balanced models, are tested for the shallow water equations on a hemisphere in an attempt to approach the ultimate limitations of the balance, inversion, and slow-manifold concepts. The accuracies achieved are far higher than for standard balanced models accurate to one or two orders in Rossby n...
متن کاملBalance, Potential-vorticity Inversion, Lighthill Radiation, and the Slow Quasimanifold
Practically our entire understanding of large-scale atmosphere–ocean dynamics depends on the notions of balance and potential-vorticity inversion. These are essential, for instance, for a clear understanding of the basic Rossby-wave propagation mechanism, or quasi-elasticity, that underlies almost every large-scale fluid-dynamical phenomenon of meteorological and oceanographical interest, from ...
